Critics Hail Dmitri Hvorostovsky's first Iago in Verdi's OtelloPublished Wednesday, September 18, 2013
In the wake of his role debut as Iago in Verdi’s Otello at the Vienna Staatsoper, Dmitri Hvorostovsky has earned critical acclaim following the production’s opening night on September 14.
“The Russian baritone offered in his debut a masterful portrayal of the vengeful villain,” writes Kurier. “His Iago vocally and dramatically dominated the first two acts of the opera unchallenged.”
Likewise, Die Presse praised the “cool, clear beauty” of Hvorostovsky’s voice and dubbed his first staged performances of the Verdian villain “an enthralling event.” Otello continues at the Staatsoper through September 23, with the next performance taking place September 20.
